The meticulous renovation and restoration of a Grade II* Listed Manor House and gardens

Pelyn, a Grade II* Listed manor in Cornwall, was comprehensively restored and renovated in order to breathe new life into a classic country house.

Occupying an elevated position within its own picturesque gardens and grounds, the original house dates back to 1601.  Since then, alterations and additions were made at various times, until a fire in 1862 marked the beginning of a period of general decline.

Filled with exquisite period features, a careful and considered programme was necessary for working within this historic framework.   The resulting designs were sympathetic to the heritage of the house, whilst modernising the interior to make it suitable for 21st century living.

A key element was to replace the graceful grand staircase, renewing lost connections and reorienting the axis of the house.  The stairs rise from the formal reception hall to a half level, where French doors open to the formal rear garden.  The stairs then split to both sides of the galleried landing.

The restoration continued with the magnificent ballroom designed by notable architect Henry Harrison and further incorporated a self-contained guest wing and coach house with housekeeper’s apartment above.

Finally, reinstating the fantastic formal gardens and grounds, complete with walled gardens, concluded the revival of this beautiful estate.
