The Fort, Wadebridge

The replacement dwelling at The Fort represented a rare opportunity to sensitively develop and enhance a unique setting within the stunning AONB backdrop of The Camel Estuary.

The site for the Fort is on the very edge of a tidal watercourse creek that forms part of the Camel estuary. The site is a small area of land previously occupied by a single storey structure that had been added to over time and over time became no longer viable, lacing in any insulation, heating and basic amenities.

The replacement dwelling is a three bedroom contemporary cottage that combines familiar building forms and materials with high quality bespoke detailing on the interior and exterior.

The materials chosen for the exterior and the form of the building give it a timeless feel that will weather and improve with age in this environment rather than degrading and aging badly. When viewed from the distant old railway bridge that crosses the mouth of the creek, this palette of materials means that The Fort disappears into its backdrop of trees and shadow, seeming almost invisible from this vantage point.
