Spindleberry, Widemouth Bay
Spindleberry is a new contemporary and modernist home in Widemouth Bay, Cornwall. Our clients for this project were seeking a radical change from the 1960s prefabricated bungalow that originally occupied the site. Our brief was to provide the design for a new contemporary and modernist home to fit the original footprint, and crucially the height, to satisfy planning criteria.
Our scheme presented an inventive ‘white box’ solution for the client in delivering a two-storey home where the ground floor was reduced below ground level with a flat roof, and the bedrooms and garden room at ground floor and living space located on the first floor. In creating this layout for the property, we have been able to maximise the once unseen, stunning sea views from the first floor, across a large west-facing terrace.
The property was designed adopting Passivhaus principles for air-tightness and has a highly insulated timber frame with wood fibre insulation and hi-tech lime-based render.
