Building projects are by their very nature complex in their realisation involving many people from different disciplines with numerous other influences brought to bear such as cost and legislation etc. Our role in this process is essentially twofold: to create a building design that satisfies our client’s requirements and secondly to guide the process by which the design is made manifest. Fundamental to our approach to design is our concern with the people who will come to use the building when complete. Not only must the building be useable for its purpose but it should be an attractive environment for its occupants which should add to their sense of well-being. In practical terms our building designs aim to be affordable not only in terms of their construction but over the life of the building in the cost of their maintenance. We also believe that good design adds financial benefit in the potential re-sale value of a building. With the threat to the environment of global warming we are keen promoters of a sustainable approach to projects to reduce unnecessary pollution and create efficient, elegant and functional buildings that respond sensitively and imaginatively to individual sites.

A common misconception is that employing an architect is a luxury few can afford. Furthermore it is thought that architectural design is purely about aesthetics, which many regard as superfluous and feel their money would be better spent on the actual construction of their building.
As architects we often have to explain we do much more than just focus on the appearance of a building, but through our efforts the value, quality and satisfaction of a building project can be greatly enhanced.
Design and construction is a complex process. Watching an episode of Grand Designs brings home just how challenging this can be, with many of the show’s self-builders seeming to be utterly drained emotionally and financially by the process! As architects, we help our clients realise their design aspirations and save them both money and heartache. Essentially our role is threefold:
1. Through detailed drawing and specification to design a building our client will find an attractive and pleasant place in which to live and work and that is also functional, durable, affordable to build, and run and maintain.
2. Co-ordinate the contribution from the many others involved in the project such as planners, engineers, surveyors, manufacturers and contractors.
3. Administer the construction contract to deliver a building for our client that is built to the price and quality as designed.
Fulfilling these roles is hard work for the simple reason that every project is unique and good architecture requires a specific response to a particular project. In addition, official regulation and guidance is continually evolving, requiring considerable effort to ensure compliance. At The Bazeley Partnership our success as architects has been built on a history of over 100 years in practice in Devon and Cornwall. Working across all sectors of construction we serve the needs of our clients in creating great places of real value.
